Mind you, this was after having had an overpriced but otherwise decent salad for lunch at the Colorado Convention Center where the Winter Outdoor Retailer show was going on. Hunger was no longer driving me, only a craving for salt. So I was crunching on thin, nutritionally vacant Lay’s potato chips. As it was, that was the driving force for the gentleman to walk from behind the booth in to the aisle to ask me, âwould you like to try a healthier way to satisfy your craving for salt?â
âLike what?â I asked.
âCrickets,â he replied.
I wasn’t sure if he was joking or serious so I stepped up to his table to take a peek at what he claimed were tasty roasted crickets. From the looks of it this wasn’t just a marketing name for something that resembled crickets â those looked exactly like crispy crickets; seasoned crickets no less.
“Wanna try some?”
What the heck. John the Baptist survived on a diet of locusts and honey so even though seasoned crickets were, contrary to my politically inconvenient white outlook on life, not likely to kill me, and maybe, just maybe, they’d be tasty.
I tried about four different flavors. All were pretty good. Salty. Spicy. Crunchy. Not bad actually. But crickets?
Available in five flavors from Aketta: Texas BBQ, Sour Cream & Onion, Sea Salt & Vinegar, Spicy Hot, and my fave, Totally Taco. And there are other cricket products. Flour even. Imagine.
